Amsterdam is known for it's bikes and canals, but for me, it's also about the light and flat colours. The light in Amsterdam is often cool... meaning there's not a yellow light like what you would find in Venice, for example. Of course every day is different, but in general, the colour palette of Holland is similar to that of New York. This scene really captured me because I love the repetitive shapes in the bikes, the buildings, the windows, and the bricks, and the trees! There's wonderful highlights and shadows, and again, my favourite thing of all time, strong perspective. This piece was sent to Italy as part of the Canadian team's entry into Aquarello Fabriano. A celebration of Watercolour in Fabriano Italy.
